A franchise that got stranger and more expensive and somehow never lost its sense of fun.
It should not have worked. A theme-park adaptation starring a rock-star pirate doing a Keith Richards impression had no business being this good. And yet here we are. The sequels are maximalist and occasionally incoherent and frequently beautiful. Take it or leave it — most people took it.
